You can apply for a well-constructed crossing that allows your vehicle to cross a footpath/verge to access the road or highway. You must own the property. The work will be done by you at your expense. Before any work can be done, you must obtain permission from us.
Before you apply for a dropped kerb
Before you submit your application, please check the Highway programme. It will show you if there are any plans for your street.
There are many factors that can cause our programs to change. The lists are not complete and should be used only as a guide. Fees are non-refundable. All applications and all works are at your own risk.
Our planning department will require you to include permission in your dropped-kerb applications to Highways Team.
If you need planning permission,
- The location of your dropped kerb will be on a road that is classified as A, C or B.
To find out which class of adopted roads are in Nottinghamshire, use our gazetteer. The first letter of a road number is the classification of road. Permission is unlikely to be required for unclassified routes (U). The gazetteer does no show any un-adopted, private roads. Contact the landowner to find out if your street is not listed. Permissions are usually granted by the street manager, developer or other responsible party. The Land Registry should be capable of confirming who owns the land.
- Your property is located in a conservation area or a listed building.
- If you are unsure, please check out the conservation areas of Nottinghamshire
- Your property will be drainable of any surface water runoff due to your new driveway
- Your property is more than a residence for one family. This includes flats, maisonettes, or commercial or industrial premises
While you might be able apply under “permitted development”, we suggest that you seek the advice of our planning department.
Prices for planning consents vary depending on how complex the site is.
Apply for a dropped kerb
Once you have received planning permission or development approval, you can submit a highways application.
You should include:
If applicable, your planning permission
- An example sketch plan showing the layout of the site.
- If applicable, permission from the property owner
- Application fee: £132.30
This fee can be paid via card. The fee cannot be returned.
The highways team will tell you if your application has been approved.

Contractors doing the work
To grant permission for the contractor to perform the work, we will need to know all details about their qualifications and insurance.
If your application is accepted, you will need to mention our reference number in your approval letter.
You may need to pay additional fees or fill out forms if you:
- Temporary traffic lights (temporary signal) are required to perform the work safely.
- Moving a street light is required

S.184 of Highways Act 1980 provides that habitual vehicular access is prohibited to land or property.
