If permission is given, you then you need to find a local contractor to perform the work for you.

It’s certainly not a DIY job as the council will have criteria that service providers must meet. Several will only permit you to use their endorsed contractors, while others make it possible for you to use your own, so long as they are certified to the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, and hold public liability insurance. For this case, there may be an added fee for highway inspections by the council.

Prices vary depending on where you live, how many kerbs are to be dropped and whether or not you wish to extend an already-dropped kerb. While some councils and contractors offer extended dropped kerbs for free, others charge as much as £1800. The job typically takes about one to two days.

The Highways Act 1980 – Section 184, makes it an offence to drive a vehicle across a footway, or verge, where there is no proper vehicle crossover. They allow for the vehicle to cross the public pedestrian footway.

An average driveway will have five kerb sections. If the Council is the owner of the road or footpath, you will need permission from the Council. The Council may deny permission for any reason, be it as a roads or planning authority, but also both.

Dropped kerb refers to the area where the vehicle crosses the road from the property’s front. This is most often a driveway with drop kerb.

Obstructing a drop kerb with a vehicle is an offense. It can be enforced by the police or local council. It doesn’t matter how absurd, you can be issued an NPCN for parking your vehicle across your dropped kerb.

Parking on a drop kerb is considered a parking violation and can result in a Penalty Notice. You can be fined for parking on a dropped kerb if you don’t have permission.

A spot for a vehicle will bring additional value to your property. The amount you pay will depend on whereabouts. It iss also worth bearing in mind that you will have to go through an application process to a get a dropped kerb outside your property, too.
