It’s definitely not a DIY job as the council will have requirements that contractors must meet. Several will only permit you to use their approved contractors, while others make it possible for you to use your own, so long as they are accredited to the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, and carry public liability insurance. Prices can vary depending upon where you are located, what width you have, how many kerbs need to be dropped, and whether you need to extend an existing drop kerb. Some contractors and councils offer an extended dropped kerb for free, while some charge up to $1800 or more. The actual job usually takes between 1 and 2 days.

The Highways Act 1980 – Section 184, makes it an offence to drive a vehicle across a footway, or verge, where there is no proper vehicle crossover. They can be used to permit vehicles to cross the public footway.

You will need to reduce five kerb sections for an average driveway. Assuming the Council owns the footpath and road, you will need to get permission from your local Council. The Council may deny permission for any reason, be it as a roads or planning authority, but also both.

Dropped kerbs are the areas where vehicles cross the road to reach the property’s front. This is most often a driveway with drop kerb.

A vehicle parked partially or fully across a dropped curb is considered obstruction. The police or the local council can enforce this violation. It doesn’t matter how absurd, you can be issued an NPCN for parking your vehicle across your dropped kerb.

Parking across a dropping kerb can be a parking contravention that could result in a Penalty-Charge Notice being issued. This means if you park in across a dropped kerb you are committing an offence unless you have permission.

At least 10 metres must be between the location of the vehicular access and the entrance to any junction or sharp corner. No part of a vehicle parked within your property may overhang the pavement or road.

To allow a car on the pavement to cross it, you will need permission. This is because pavement may need to have additional strength to handle the vehicle’s weight, as well as protect any pipes or cables underneath.
